Two types of expertise necessary to build a successful business.

Our mission is to help the online entrepreneur grow their business, revenue and fulfillment until they’re buzzing, crackling and {cough} fizzling with creativity, impact, potential and purpose.
There are two types of expertise necessary to build a successful business.
But before we get into that, let me tell you how Tom put together his business idea.
Tom Ross is a Fizzler who, today, runs a brilliant community for web and graphic designers. Basically, he curates the best design resources from across the web.
He has multiple employees, tens of thousands of customers and is making more than a full time living doing work he loves.
But before Tom was a raging success, he struggled through 10 years of building design expertise — the actual skill and craft of design — by slogging through making tons of one-off websites for anyone who would pay him… trading his time and sweat for money.
He grew his skills and his clients started paying more, but at the end of the day, he knew he didn’t want to be a freelancer forever.
That’s when he started his first design blog, running it for 4 years without making a substantial income from it. He wanted to get serious, wanted to earn real income outside of design services… stop trading time for money.
So he joined Fizzle. Things started to click as he filled in some of the gaps in his business expertise.
“Whatever you choose to focus your business on, you’re going to need deep subject knowledge…”
Corbett in the 10 Mistakes Guide
There are really two types of expertise required to build a successful business:
Business expertise — the nuts and bolts and tactics and strategies to do all the things that make a business work. That’s what we teach at Fizzle.
Topic expertise — the guts of your business. The photography for the photographer. The painting for the painter. The design chops in Tom’s story.
Tom had some gaps in his business expertise… what he should expect, how to listen to customers, how to find the problem and share the solution. He filled in those gaps with some training.
You can do the same thing. However, even before that, you have to choose the right general topic. If you want to be an entrepreneur, this is where it starts.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when starting a business is to choose a topic no one cares about, solving a problem no one has. More on that in the next email. For now let’s focus on the topic you want to focus your business towards.
Read this article I wrote on building expertise (the topic kind). It should spark some good ideas for you.
Then, grab a sheet of paper and make two lists. On the first list, write down the skills and expertise you’ve already built in your career. On the second list, write down the skills expertise you want to have, the things that make you excited right now… excited enough to stick with them through the work of building a business.
That’s it. Grab a notepad and a wet pen, pour some of your favorite beverage into a charming cup and invest in yourself enough to put a dent in those tasks. Who knows what you’ll find out.
I’ll be back tomorrow with the next step.
